Tips That Apply Everywhere

These patterns make every conversation better, no matter what you're working on.

Start fresh often

Context windows have limits. When you switch topics, start a new conversation. Long threads get noisy and Claude loses focus.

Give context, not keywords

Claude is not a search engine. Include audience, format, tone, and constraints. "Draft a 3-paragraph email to our channel partners declining this proposal because pricing is 30% above budget" beats "vendor email decline."

Verify everything

Claude is confident even when wrong. Double-check numbers, dates, regulatory claims, and anything you'll share externally. Trust but verify.

Iterate, don't restart

If the first response isn't right, give feedback: "Make it shorter," "More formal," "Add the revenue numbers." Claude adjusts within the same conversation.

Use forcing functions

Generic prompts get generic answers. These techniques get better output:

"Give me 10 options" - Generate many, then cherry-pick. Faster than describing the perfect answer.
"Play devil's advocate" - Forces Claude to argue against you instead of agreeing.
"Score this 0-100%" - Have Claude rate sections of your draft, then fix the weak ones.
"What am I not thinking about?" - Surfaces blind spots you didn't know to ask about.
"Rewrite this in half the words" - Tighter output than asking to "make it shorter."
"You're a skeptical customer reading this" - Assigning a role changes the lens. Gets honest feedback.
"Write something like this but for Q2" - Paste an example. Showing the format beats describing it.

Structure your project folder

Don't dump everything in one folder. Use subfolders that match how you think about the work:

references/ - Read-only context (brand guides, policies, data)
outputs/ - Files Claude creates for you
done/ - Completed work you want to keep

Claude reads the folder structure and uses it to decide where to save new files.

Add a CLAUDE.md file

Create a file called CLAUDE.md in the root of your project folder. Write instructions that apply to every conversation: your role, what this project is, formatting preferences, things to avoid. Claude reads it automatically at the start of every session. Think of it as persistent instructions you don't have to repeat.

Combine plugins

The real power is stacking plugins. Use Google Calendar + Data to analyze meeting patterns. Use Slack + Marketing to audit your channel messaging. Multiple plugins activate automatically in the same conversation.

Delegate with three questions

Before handing off a task, answer these: What does "done" look like? What context can't Claude guess? What constraints apply? The clearer you are upfront, the less back-and-forth you need.

Ask for a changelog

When Claude edits or creates multiple files, ask it to write a what-changed.md documenting every decision it made. Review that before accepting the work. Especially important for anything you'll share externally.

Back up critical files

Before letting Claude reorganize, rename, or edit important files, make a copy. Cowork can move fast and undo isn't always straightforward. A quick duplicate of the original folder takes 10 seconds and saves you from a bad day.

Test on dummy files first

If you're asking Claude to process, reorganize, or transform a batch of files, run it on a small test set first. Verify it interprets your instructions correctly before pointing it at the real data.

Keep the desktop app open

Closing Claude Desktop kills any running Cowork task. If you've kicked off a long process (research, file reorganization, scheduled task), leave the app running until it finishes.

Create a folder called Claude_Company inside your user folder. On Mac that's /Users/yourname/Claude_Company. On Windows it's C:\Users\yourname\Claude_Company.

Create your writing style guide

In the Chat wizard you gave Claude writing samples and preferences. Now turn that into a reusable reference file. Open a Chat conversation and paste this prompt:

These files give Claude context about your company in every Cowork conversation. It uses your brand colors, knows your business, and writes in your voice without you explaining it each time.

Calendar Audit

Open Cowork and paste the prompt below. Make sure Google Calendar is connected. In the Claude app, click your profile icon, then Settings, then Plugins. Look for Google Calendar in the list and enable it. If it's not available in your organization, skip to the Downloads task below.

Pull my calendar for the past 3 months. Categorize every meeting by type (1:1, team sync, external, focus time, other). Show me: total hours in meetings vs. available time, which meeting types eat the most time, and any meetings that look redundant or could be async. Put the results in a clean summary.

Clean Up Downloads

In Cowork, click Set project folder and select your Downloads folder (or add it as an additional folder).

Before you start: If your Downloads folder contains files with customer PII, financial data, or other sensitive information, skip this task or move those files out first. Review your data processing agreement for details.

Scan my Downloads folder. Organize files into subfolders by type (documents, images, installers, spreadsheets, other). List anything older than 90 days that's safe to delete. Don't move or delete anything yet - just show me the plan and let me approve.

Both tasks use your personal data (calendar, files). Nothing leaves your machine. All processing happens locally through the Claude desktop app.

You'll install three plugins, analyze a sample dataset, and produce a dashboard + deck. This is the kind of work that takes hours manually. Cowork does it in minutes.

If a slash command isn't recognized, the plugin didn't install correctly. Go back to Step 1 below and verify all three plugins appear in your plugin list under Customize.

Data Privacy: Do not share customer PII, internal financial data, or proprietary information in prompts or project files. Claude Code has full read/write/execute access to your machine - only grant it access to directories you intend to work in.

Code Tips

Start with Plan Mode

For any task with more than one step, start in Plan Mode. Claude's plans are better than jumping straight to code. Review before executing.

Keep sessions short

Context windows have limits. Start a new Claude Code session for each distinct task. Resume with /save if you need continuity across sessions.

Be specific in prompts

Name the exact file, function, and behavior you want. "Fix the login bug" is worse than "In auth.ts, the JWT expiry check on line 45 should use >= not >".

Review before accepting

Claude writes good code but makes mistakes. Review every change before committing. Use git diff to see exactly what changed.

Get Started

Start with the setup card below, then work through the exercises.

Claude Code lives inside the same Claude app you downloaded in Step 1. It reads, writes, and executes code on your machine. Different from Chat or Cowork - this is for building software, editing files, and shipping code.

1. Open Code mode

In the Claude desktop app, click the Code tab in the sidebar.

2. Install Git

Paste this into Claude Code. If Git is already installed, it'll skip ahead.

Run `git --version` to check if Git is installed. If it's not found, run `xcode-select --install` and wait for it to finish. Tell me the result.

3. Log into GitHub

You need access to your team's GitHub org. Paste this into Claude Code:

Run `gh auth status` to check if I'm logged into GitHub. If not, run `gh auth login` and walk me through it. Use HTTPS and a browser-based login. Tell me the result.

If the clone in the next step fails with a permissions error, ask your manager to add you to the team's GitHub org.

4. Clone the team skills repo

Run these commands: mkdir -p ~/team_claude git clone https://github.com/your-org/claude-skills.git ~/team_claude/claude-skills If the directory already exists, run `cd ~/team_claude/claude-skills && git pull` instead. Tell me the result.

5. Run the installer

Run `~/team_claude/claude-skills/setup.sh --all` and tell me what it installed.

This installs team skills (/ship, /save, /plan, /review, and more), sets your model to Opus, and copies context files to your Claude config.

6. Verify

Type /help in Claude Code. You should see team skills listed. If you see them, you're set.

Going further: You can also run Claude Code in VS Code (install the "Claude Code" extension from the marketplace) or directly in your terminal (npm install -g @anthropic-ai/claude-code). Same commands, same skills, different interface.

A pricing calculator helps prospects estimate costs for your product. You'll build a working version from a single prompt. Claude Code creates the files, writes the code, and produces something you can open in your browser.

Create a folder on your Desktop called pricing-calculator. In Claude Code, paste:

Paste this prompt:

Build a pricing calculator for iRESTORE products. Save it as index.html in this directory. Inputs: - Plan tier: dropdown (Starter, Professional, Enterprise, Custom) - Team size: number input (1-500) - Billing cycle: toggle (Monthly, Annual) Output: estimated monthly cost, annual savings if switching to annual billing, and a recommended next step (like "Start a free trial" or "Contact sales for a custom quote"). Design: - brand colors: navy #1e293b, gold #f59e0b, teal #10b981, cream #f8fafc - Inter for headings and body text - Responsive, clean, production-quality Use realistic but FAKE placeholder pricing. These are not real numbers. Add a visible disclaimer: "Estimates only. Actual pricing may vary based on your specific needs and contract terms. Contact sales for exact pricing." Include a "Start Over" button to reset the form.

Watch Claude build the estimator. It creates the file, writes all the code, and tells you when it's done. This takes 30-60 seconds. You'll see Claude show what files it's creating as it works.
Open the result in your browser. Find the index.html file in your pricing-calculator folder and double-click it, or ask Claude Code: "Open index.html in my browser."

What you practiced: Building a complete tool from a single detailed prompt. The key was being specific about inputs, outputs, design, and constraints. The more detail you give Claude Code, the closer the first attempt gets to what you want.

Take the estimator you just built and ship it to your configured domain. That's the section at the bottom of the homepage where team projects land. Claude Code handles the git workflow - you tell it what to do in plain English, and it creates branches, commits code, and opens pull requests on your behalf.

Before you start - clone the project repo

You need the project repo on your machine. Paste this into Claude Code:

Run: git clone https://github.com/your-org/your-project.git ~/Desktop/your-project && cd ~/Desktop/your-project If the directory already exists, run: cd ~/Desktop/your-project && git pull Tell me the result.

Paste this prompt:

Ship the pricing calculator I built to the team site. Steps: 1. Create a feature branch called feat/pricing-calculator 2. Copy ~/Desktop/pricing-calculator/index.html to a new pricing-calculator/ folder in this repo 3. Add to permissions.json - restrict to my email only for now 4. Add my project to the SANDBOX_APPS array in index.html (the homepage, not the pricing-calculator one). Follow the format of the commented-out example. 5. Commit with a clear message 6. Push and open a PR Use /ship when ready.

/ship pushes your code, runs tests, and creates the pull request in one step.

Claude Code runs each step and shows you what it's doing. When it finishes, it gives you a link to the pull request on GitHub.
Share the PR link in #engineering for review. A teammate approves it. (For this exercise, you can approve it yourself on GitHub.)
Once the PR is merged, the site auto-deploys in 1-2 minutes. Your project shows up in the Sandbox section at your configured domain.

What you practiced: The full deployment workflow - feature branch, permissions config, PR creation, review, and auto-deploy.
